Kozo Paper and Thread Inclusions
October 2021
This portrait of Mother Earth illustrates the energy of nature, as she prevails over the pandemonium of mankind. Despite having endured many hardships in her journey, she still holds her face up high in triumph as she liberates herself from the ground. This contrast between the fragility and stability of nature is highlighted by the kozo paper: which appears to be weak on the surface but in truth is robust at its core. Handmade paper casting has become critical in my work and in pushing the material boundaries of what defines sculpture today.
Process
This piece was first sculpted in oil-based clay and then had a rubber mold taken from it. Handmade sheets of Kozo paper were laid into the mold and thread was added to create the surface details. Cotton and Abaca paper were layered in for structural support and the piece stands hollow all on its own.
