Shedding Fear

Shedding Fear Maquette

Given the theme of the White Page representing both the fear of the unknown and new opportunities, I was inspired to create Shedding Fear. The concept first came into fruition through a small clay sketch which gave me the freedom to move through many iterations in a short amount of time. Knowing that I wanted to convey the idea of a leap of faith, as well as, giving the piece historical context, I began by working on imagery that would combine my thoughts into one cohesive sculpture.

Where it all began…

Lucca Bienalle 2022

For the 2022 Lucca Biennale Outdoor Exhibition, I proposed to make an approximately 7-foot-tall female figure cast in handmade paper. She is blindfolded and unaware of what lies ahead, yet still bares the confidence to thrust one foot forward, symbolizing her courage. She inspires other women to bravely go forward, acknowledging their fear of the unknown and gathering strength both from within, and from those who have walked before them. Her dress whips and bellows in the wind, a symbolic nod to Camille Claudel’s The Waltz. I chose to pay homage to Claudel for this piece as she laid the foundation for all sculptresses by being the first woman to attend a formal figurative sculpture program. Walking in her footsteps, I too hope to inspire others, and further the path for those who come after me.
